Why family rules change the decision
A route that fits one main applicant may not provide the same outcome for a spouse, a young child, an adult child, parents or other relatives. Definitions of eligible dependants and whether they can apply together differ across countries, government programmes and legal categories.
What counts as an eligible spouse?
Some programmes recognise legally married spouses, while others may treat registered partners or other relationships differently. Marriage or civil-status records, prior marriages and translations may be requested. Never assume a partner is eligible before checking the programme’s current definition.
Minor children and adult dependants
Minor children often fall under different rules from adult children. Some programmes specify age limits, continuous education, financial dependence or disability-related conditions for adult dependants. Additional dependent fees, background checks, medical requirements or documentation may apply.
Can parents or other relatives join?
Some schemes accept certain parents or other dependants under strict rules, while many pathways do not. The applicant should confirm age thresholds, care or financial-support conditions, and whether an existing household relationship must be proven.
Documentation and family history
Birth certificates, marriage certificates, custody orders, consent from legal guardians, proof of residence and supporting financial records can be relevant. For a child travelling or acquiring nationality, consent and nationality effects under both parents’ legal systems require care.
Does approval of the main applicant automatically approve everyone?
No. Applicants and dependants may undergo individual eligibility checks, and each person’s status should be confirmed under the relevant legal route. Naturalisation by residence can also require separate applications and later residence obligations for family members.
A practical family checklist
Before seeking a quotation, list every intended applicant with date of birth, relationship, nationality, current location and dependency circumstances. Request a complete written breakdown covering each person, official fees, documentary requirements and whether future-born children can be included.
